With a bilateral administrative arrangement signed by the Heads of the Asylum Service of Greece and the Migration and Border Service of Portugal, the relocation of up to 1,000 international protection applicants and/or beneficiaries from Greece to Portugal was agreed.
The relevant agreement in principle was drawn up by Migration Policy Minister, Dimitris Vitsas and the Portuguese Minister of Interior, Eduardo Cabrita, during his visit in Athens last October. Negotiations were then launched between their respective competent authorities, which led to the signing of the Administrative Arrangement.
The aforementioned Administrative Arrangement provides for a first pilot phase, during which 100 international protection applicants and/or beneficiaries residing in Hospitality Structures in Greece will be relocated to Portugal.
The Administrative Arrangement, which technically defines the procedure of the agreement implementation, is in line with the international and European asylum legislation, prioritises families and has received the approval of the European Commission.
