Greek Government Spokesman Mr. Petsas on Attica Earthquake

“As you already know, on 14.13 pm an earthquake of 5.1 point of the Richter scale occurred with a focal point 23 km northwest of Athens, in Parnitha mountain area. There are no reports of serious injuries. There are confirmed reports of collapses of an old house in Drapetsona and an uninhabited residence in Petralona.
Damages have been reported on houses facades in Piraeus, in the peripheral route of Egaleo and the Monastiraki area. The Fire Service has received calls to unleash people from elevators. Mobile telecommunications networks do operate, but overloading has caused temporary problems. The state is on alert from the first moment. The Minister of Citizens Protection Mr. Chryssochoides and the General Secretary for Civil Protection Mr. Chardalias went from the first moment to the Operations Management Center in order to coordinate all necessary actions.
The Prime Minister remains in his office and is being constantly informed. The National Ministry of Defence is on readiness in case its assistance is needed.
I would like to recommend composure. In Greece we are familiar with earthquakes and I call on all citizens to remain informed and take all necessary self protection measures.
We shall come back with more updates”.
