Deputy Minister to the Prime Minister and Government Spokesperson
Mr. Stelios Petsas, born in 1970, is a graduate of the National School of Public Administration. He holds a degree in International and European Studies from the Department of Political Science and Public Administration at the National and Kapodistrian University, as well as a Master’s degree in International Trade Law from Panteion University.
Mr. Petsas has a wide experience as a director in public and private sector. He is a senior manager of the State General Accounting Office and has served as rapporteur on salary, state budget and fiscal relations with the EU and International Organizations. In 2006 he was Greece’s financial adviser to the OECD, and since 2012 he has been chief of revenue at the State General Accounting Office. From 2012-2014 he was one of the main negotiators of the Greek side on fiscal policy with the creditors.
The new government spokesperson has prepared and implemented the reduction of the VAT rate on food by 10% since August 2013 at a technical level, as well as the 30% reduction in the Extraordinary Solidarity Contribution since January 2015. Since 2015, he was appointed Fiscal Policy Advisor to the President of New Democracy. Among other positions, he has been Director of the Office of the Deputy Minister of Finance, member of the Board of Directors of OTE and Cosmote, member of the Bureau of the OECD’s Economic and Development Review Committee (EDRC), member of the board of the Union of Young Scientists on European Studies and the Alumni Association of the National School of Public Administration, Head of Revenue of the State General Accounting Office, Financial Adviser of Greece at the OECD, National Expert on Institution Building Projects of the European Commission (Twinning projects) and representative of Greece in working groups and committees of the EU.
Mr Petsas has published books and articles on fiscal policy, international economics, structural reforms and European integration. He speaks English and French, is married and father of two girls. In April 2018, Mr. Petsas took over the post of director of the office of Kyriakos Mitsotakis in place of Michalis Bekiris, who resigned for personal reasons.
